How To Style A Colorful Gallery Wall

Need some gallery wall inspiration? This is my office!

Colorful Gallery Wall Inspiration

I’m the kind of person who needs color and textures around me when I’m working to boost my creative juices. Imagine sitting in a plain white room and being inspired…. uhhh, yeah no. I have a weird half frown on my face just even thinking about it. I can’t imagine being inspired to create anything in a boring room. Move over sterile minimalism, colorful maximalism is the way of the future. (Well… my future. LOL).

The secret to a perfect gallery wall: IT DOESN’T NEED TO BE PERFECT! When it comes to gallery walls, I believe with my whole heart that imperfections make it more beautiful. The key is to keep things interesting. Frames and art with texture in a multitude of sizes and colors are what you want to strive for. Keep your eyes on their theoretical tiny little design toes.

My 3 Favorite Guidelines For Styling A Gallery Wall:

Shape: have a mix of frame sizes and shapes.

Color: If you are going for an eclectic look, mix in some funky frames in cool colors as well colorful matte boards!

Texture:  Mix your materials! A mixture of wooden, resin, and metal frames is far more interesting than every frame being the same medium.

Don’t force it! (Aka…. Running to Homegoods / Target and buying 10 pieces of generic art is a no-no.) Let your gallery wall come together over time. Start with a few pieces you already own, toss in something you’ve been eyeing, and then let the rest accumulate like frost in your freezer.

The art in my gallery is a combination of pieces people have made for me, pieces I’ve bid-on from Everything But The House, things I’ve purchased off of Facebook Marketplace / thrifted from second hand shops while traveling, some from Minted, Artfully Walls, Target, and a few that I’ve painted myself.

Many of the frames in my gallery, I’ve owned for a few years and have painted over them a couple of times. There’s no need to spend big bucks on a frame in a certain color. Just find a frame that you like the shape of and spray paint it! My favorite brand of spray paint is tried-and-true Rust-Oleum, they have so many bright and saturated color in their line. (If you want to match the exact shade of chartreuse that I have a few times in this particular gallery, I used: this.)
